One of the main dental jobs that dentists often complete now is with regards to whitening a patient’s teeth. The popularity of this process has increased dramatically over the last few years. Because of this trend, we thought we’d provide you with a few tips to improve the whiteness of your teeth.
Use baking soda
Baking soda is often discussed in the context of teeth whitening, but this should be avoided. It may work for cleaning your home, but it’s certainly not the most effective and safe way for whitening your teeth. Baking soda is actually abrasive, so it may remove stains, but it will work away and remove the enamel of your teeth, which could lead to far greater problems further down the line, including darkening your teeth.
Eat dark foods
There are certain foods that can contribute to teeth staining including marinara sauce, blueberries, and soy sauce. Any foods that have a very dark pigmentation can contribute to staining.
Avoid energy drinks
It is important to stay away from energy drinks, aswell as tea and coffee. The acid these energy drinks contain erodes your teeth. If you still want to drink these energy drinks, then we would recommend drinking them through a straw, which will reduce the effects on your teeth.
Swap your toothbrush
You can improve the chances of whiter teeth by simply swapping your toothbrush with a newer one. Experts believe that a tooth brush should be changed every 3 months, or when the bristles of the toothbrush start to bend. If this is not done, the cleaning you do complete using the toothbrush isn’t as effective.
Brush your tongue
This is often overlooked in the tooth brushing process. Most commonly, people brush their tongue for fresh breath, but various experts say it can improve the coloring of your teeth. Because tongues are a source of bacteria, which can lead to discoloring, the chances of staining occurring are reduced when you brush your tongue.
Eat raw fruits and vegetables
As many of us know already, having a balanced diet by eating fruit and vegetables is good for your body and your teeth. Other foods are also beneficial such as nuts, raw carrots, apples, and cauliflower. These foods are proven to remove surface staining.
Many people use these strips, but often experts believe they lead to uneven whitening, but these strips do work for some. Consulting a dental hygienist can help you see if this is right for you.
Rinse with water after eating oranges
When eating oranges, they contain acid which can erode the tooth enamel, which in turn can lead to staining. This can be limited if you rinse your mouth with water to wash away any acid from the orange that has been left over.
