Having gout was one of the most traumatic experiences of my life. It put me through an excruciating pain that I will never forget. That’s why it’s such a big relief that I got rid of it thanks to this podiatry clinic.
I’m just a regular 30-year-old guy in Singapore, working as a clerk in a construction firm. I thought everything was going to be fine since I wasn’t in as much risk as the other workers in a construction site, but what I didn’t know was that I would contract a joint inflammation known as “gout”.
Gout is relatively common in Singapore and is usually obtained because of unhealthy diet and lifestyle. Since I work in the construction industry where it’s fast-paced and requires a lot of energy to get the work done in a day, I’ve been eating a lot of meat and other high-protein food to keep my energy high. I’ve also been asked out a lot by officemates to eat bakkutteh and laksa.
At the time, I didn’t know that eating too much meat-based food would have some dire effects on my joints, especially on the joints on my feet. It was roughly a few months after I started eating more meat-based food that I felt that my feet were becoming stiff. I didn’t mind it much since I was too focused with work to pay much attention to it.
After a while, some of my joints started to feel painful, there was also a short surge of pain in my foot that comes and go. The light pain quickly turned into an unbearable pain after a few months. My feet also became very swollen and sensitive and it became so hard to walk that I had to take painkillers just so I could get up and go to work.
My officemate suggested I go to East Coast Podiatry Clinic to have an evaluation and said it would be their speciality since they specialise in foot care and treatment. I took his advice and headed there.
When I got there, I was asked for the history of pain in my feet and joints. They also ran medical tests like x-ray on my foot and blood tests. When the test results came out, they saw that I was suffering from gout and needed to undergo gout treatment.
Because my ankle was swelling when I went to the clinic, the first gout treatment they gave me was a warm-to-cold contrast therapy to reduce the swelling. They also saw that my uric acid wasextremely high because of my meat-based diet. So they prescribed me medication to lower my uric acid and advised me to keep away from too many meat-based meals so I could reduce the chances of a gout attack.
They also did some offloading methods so that the swollen area of my feet due to gout won’t be given too much pressure and can have time to heal.
After a few months of regular check-up at ECPC and following the gout treatment plan that me and my podiatrist crafted, I had very little gout attacks and it was considerably less painful than when it was before. I could finally go to work properly without the unbearable pain and I’ve been eating more healthy meals to counter the gout attacks.
